DescriptionThese comprise 5 letters; 4 are written from 40 Prince's Gardens [London], SW and the other, dated Christmas Day 1902, from on board HMS Good Hope prior to the arrival of the Chamberlains in Durban, [South Africa] the following day.

All are letters of thanks and refer to presents of flowers and books and to the gift of a Japanese ball to exercise an injured hand. One letter, dated 10 July 1902, thanks Austen for the expressions of sympathy for Joseph Chamberlain [following his accident in a horse-drawn cab, 7 July]. The letter of 16 July 1906 relates to messages of congratulations on Joseph Chamberlain's [43rd] birthday and refers to the reception he received in Birmingham.
