He writes to express his satisfaction at the 'striking success of the City demonstration' [the march by members of the Stock Exchange in London on May 3 to express dissatisfaction with William Gladstone's Second Home Rule Bill, during which a copy of the Bill was burnt in front of the Guildhall, and at which Chamberlain was principal speaker]. He declares that the Guildhall is 'a grant pulpit for preaching a national sermon' and thanks Eykyn for providing him with such an opportunity
