| Description | Letter, dated 16 December and written from Highbury, Moor Green, Birmingham in which he congratulates Reay on his appointment to the position of Governor of Bombay. He writes that 'Thus is a great work before you and real responsibility which makes the post very much more important than the one which some time ago you declined'. He asks how Lady Reay views the prospect: 'I fear the changes must cause her many regrets & some anxiety'.
He goes on to say the opportunities of service to the state are rare, especially for Peers, and likely to become rarer. He ends by writing that 'when you come back the Democracy will be in full swing - thanks to the admirable way in which Lord Salisbury has played the Radical hand in order once more to dish the Whigs. 'It will be a costly game for himself and his party' |
