TitleLetter from Joseph Priestley to Mr. Gurney
Extent1 item
DescriptionLetter written by Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) to Mr. Gurney of Walworth on 14 March 1793 from Clapton. Priestley writes in reference to the Birmingham riots of 1791 which destroyed his new Meeting House and home at Sparkbrook. He asks Gurney to '...procure me evidence of a Mr. Jones, clerk to Mr. Brooke of Birmingham declaring that he led the rioters on the [14]th of July to the New Meeting. By doing this you will greatly oblige me, and my fellow sufferers in that riot..' Priestley states that he does not think he will make legal use of the information but that it would help in his dealings with the clergy of Birmingham.
