Extent1 item
Date1789
DescriptionLetter written by Joseph Priestley (1733-1804), from Birmingham 20 July 1789, to Samuel Parkes (1761-1825, Chemist) of Stourbridge. In a letter discussing theology Priestley says that he has 'the same objection that you have to all the collections of Psalms and Hymns now in use among Dissenters, and having been disappointed in those of Mr Cappe and Mr Walker, for which I waited many years, I have prevailed upon Mr Hawkes to assist me in making another for our own use, and that of a few congregations who will join with us...However, as there cannot be any inconvenience in having a number of good collections for the same purpose, I wish you would go on with yours...' Priestley closes by wishing Parkes '..success in your very laudable endeavour to save the cause of christianity in this way'. Letter accompanied by copy of engraved portrait of Joseph Priestley.
