Baring (1871-1957, Liberal Party politician) sends Allard (liberal political organiser) his 'warmest congratulations' on the result of the Saffron Walden election. He is surprised that Mr Pease achieved such a clear victory over Mr Gray, 'a local man'. He attributes a large part of the success to Allard's efforts.
The letter refers to a by-election that took place in Saffron Walden, Essex, in May 1901, after the death of Liberal MP Armine Wodehouse. The Liberal candidate, Joseph Albert (Jack) Pease, held the seat with an increased majority over the Conservative candidate Charles Wing Gray. |
