DescriptionLetter written from Brompton Row, dated 14 November. Rumford [Sir Benjamin Thompson, 1753-1814, natural philosopher and philanthropist] sends Ash [1764-1829, physician] the first two volumes of his essays, with thanks for Ash's care during his illness in Naples. Rumford recalls the kindness received and expresses his gratitude and respect. On the back of the letter, in another hand, is written 'Count Rumford's Essays - Sonnet by Coleridge 1796' with a poem beginning: 'These, Virtue, are thy triumphs, that adorn / Fitliest our nature [...]'. With a handwritten note on Count Rumford's biography and an engraving of him.
