Palmerston [Henry Temple, 1739-1802, politician and traveller] reports on his tour with Count Rumford [Sir Benjamin Thompson, 1753-1814, natural philosopher and philanthropist], which he describes as a 'great success'. He notes that they took a long route in order to avoid the armies and 'scenes of action' [of the Revolutionary Wars] and have decided to cancel their second tour. He goes on to say that he hopes Rumford [in Munich] will not become involved in 'the Business and Intrigues of the Country'. Palmerston writes about preparing to return to England, where he hopes to see Ash [1764-1829, physician]. |
