| Description | Satirical poem in the form of a letter 'From Mrs Acton to her nephew Mr Evans'. Mrs Acton warns her nephew about spending Christmas amongst the 'scholars' at Rossana: 'For my nephew's appearance I own I must quake / When I think what a moderate figure you'll make'. The poem contains references to the literary and scientific pursuits of various members of the household.
With a note from 'J.E.D.' describing the poem and highlighting the reference to his mother, Miss Butticuz (later Davis). |
| Notes | In 'The Collected Poetry of Mary Tighe' (John Hopkins University Press: 2016) edited by Paula R. Feldman, C. Wallace Martin Professor of English, University of South Carolina, and Brian C. Cooney, it is proposed that this letter is not in the hand of Mary Tighe but that it is a copy by her sister-in-law, Caroline Hamilton. |
