TitleCorrespondence between Bernard G. Hall and Rev Dr William Lansdell Wardle
Extent1 item
Date1930
DescriptionLetter from Hall, written on headed notepaper of The Guardian Office, Manchester, to Dr W. L. Wardle of Hartley College [Manchester] concerning the offer of a gift of the book, 'Newcome's Twelve Minor Prophets (1785)' which he had 'picked up on the barrows to save it from destruction'. He is making the offer at Professor Dodd's suggestion and indicates that Wardle may be interested in the book, particularly because of the extensive marginal notes by an unknown scholar. The letter is dated 20 November [19]30. At this date Wardle, a Primitive Methodist minister, was Principal of the Hartley Victoria College, Manchester but it is not clear if the book was offered to him for the college or as a private individual.

On the back of the letter is Wardle's reply in which he declines the offer and suggests that the Rylands Library may be pleased to accept it. His opinion is that the book is of 'historic rather than ordinary usefulness' and not the kind of book a private library of restricted size or even an ordinary college library can find room for. This letter is undated but it bears a receipt stamp of the Manchester Guardian of 25 November 1931.

It is highly unlikely that there was a gap of a year between the original letter from Hall and Wardle's reply. The implication is that there is an error in date either on the letter from Hall or on the date stamp on Wardle's reply.
