TitleLetter sequence of volumes of drawings and sketches of elements of church art and architecture
Extent19 volumes, 1 file and 1 envelope
Date1935-1958
DescriptionThis series of volumes comprises two different categories of volume. Both categories are devoted to a single architectural and artistic feature or a group of closely related features, as indicated by the title assigned by Richardson.

One category contain drawings and sketches of examples of architectural and artistic elements, principally found in churches and churchyards in England and Wales but also in Scotland and elsewhere. These volumes usually include some additional notes and listings compiled by Richardson and these are similar to the format of his first series of numbered volumes (see MS115/1/1-70). Some of the volumes in this category contain one or more indexes to the illustrations which have been created by the compiler

The other category consist exclusively of listings and notes relating to architectural and artistic elements. These volumes appear to be companion volumes to those which contain only drawings and sketches and have no listings and notes interleaved. For example, several volumes are devoted to listings of and notes relating to fonts in the English and Welsh counties, Volumes M - S (MS115/2/13-19); the listings make crossreferences to illustrations in the volumes of sketches of fonts in the first series, Volumes 1-6 (MS115/1/1-6) . Others contain listings of monuments, Volume A (MS115/2/1), pre-Conquest stones, Volume E (MS115/2/5), cross slabs and coffin lids, Volume F (MS115/2/6), royal arms, Volume J (MS115/2/10), heraldry of religious houses, Volume K (MS115/2/11). These also contain cross references to illustration found in other volumes.

The last two items in this series, although allocated a letter by Richardson - T and U - and described by him in his list as volumes, consist of an envelope containing two picture postcards and a file of loose sketches and notes.
ArrangementThese volumes were lettered A - U by Richardson and these letters have been retained in the title and Richardson's own order has also been kept.
