TitleManuscript and printed versions of the ticket for the amateur performance
Extent2 items
Date1848
DescriptionThe manuscript text for the ticket has been drafted by Charles Dickens which includes information about the purpose of the amateur performance being 'in aid of a Fund for the endowment of a perpetual curatorship of Shakespeare's House to be always held by some one distinguished in Literature, and more especially in Dramatic Literature, and to secure the bestowal of the appointment in the first instance on Mr Sheridan Knowles'. Dickens has indicated, by double underlining, the word he wished to be printed in capital letters.

These two items have been pasted together at the top left hand corner, presumably by the printer, Hugh Hutton who has annotated the manuscript version to indicate that this text is in Charles Dickens's handwriting and that he had received it 'for the purpose explained by the card hereto attached'. The attached printed card appears to be the ticket used by Hugh Hutton to attend the performance: it includes the reserved seat and row number and has been annotated with his initials 'HH'; it also has been partially cut through the centre but it is unknown whether this is a contemporary cut and whether it relates to the presentation of the ticket for admission
