Administrative HistoryThe Association of Special Education was founded in 1903 as the National Special Schools Union. It subsequently became known as the Special Schools Association in and then became the Association of Special Education in 1962.

In 1973, the Association of Special Education merged with the Guild of Teachers of Backward Children and the College of Special Education and a new organisation, the National Council for Special Education, was formed. The National Council for Special Education, in turn, amalgamated with the National Association for Remedial Education (founded in 1963) in 1992 to form the National Association for Special Educational Needs.
