In the foreword to the published text, Allen notes that 'this book was several years in the writing' and makes it clear that the finished product is partly the result of separate research undertaken at different times during the 1970s on, for example, the American short story, the short story in Ireland and Kipling.
The drafts detailed below reflect these origins: there are many different sequences of page numbers and subsequent renumbering and reordering of pages, use of different size page size and typeface:
