Datend [1970s]
DescriptionWith manuscript corrections.

In the foreword to the published text, Allen notes that 'this book was several years in the writing' and makes it clear that the finished product is partly the result of separate research undertaken at different times during the 1970s on, for example, the American short story, the short story in Ireland and Kipling.
The drafts detailed below reflect these origins: there are many different sequences of page numbers and subsequent renumbering and reordering of pages, use of different size page size and typeface:

/1 Typescripts, numbered by Allen into one sequence (his page numbers 1-180), comprising drafts of the following sections of the published text: I i; II iii (part); II ii, iii; III i; IV ii-iv; VI ii. 182 pp
/2 Typescripts, numbered in one sequence (his page numbers 1-47), comprising drafts of the following sections of the published text: I ii; II i; III iii. 60 pp
/3 Typescripts of other sections of the published text, with separate page numbering sequences for the draft text about individual authors: III iii; IV i, v (part); V iv; VII iii; VIII iv (part)
/4 Typescript drafts relating to the Irish short story and Irish authors, including a version of his survey of the short story in Ireland (first given as a lecture at a colloquium on Anglo-Irish
writing held at York University, Toronto,1974), with some redrafted and additional text (incomplete). 79 pp

Much of the above is used in or as a basis for the published text of The Short Story in English, including the sections on Joyce, III ii; Mary Lavin, VII ii; and the concluding section, IX iv, relating to such authors as Montague and Julia O'Faolain
