DescriptionJohn Blunt's role as a consular official was wide ranging and included gathering statistics relating to populations, schools, trade, and also military intelligence, for communication to the Embassy in Constantinople and to the Foreign Office. He also took responsibility for Christian communities and Protestant missionaries. He intervened in various political and local matters, most notably dealing with brigands and negotiating the release of their captives. These papers mainly relate to the period 1879-1899, during which he was Consul-General at Salonica. A small quantity relates to his earlier service elsewhere in the Balkans and to his final posting as Consul-General in Boston from 1899 to 1902.
