Administrative HistoryThe firm of John and Daniel Smallwood, rulemakers of Leopold Street, Birmingham was established in 1810. It remained in the same family and only became a limited company in 1952. It was one of the most prominent manufacturers of rulemakers in the nineteenth century and was one of only very few still in existence in the 1960s. No other records of this firm are known to survive.
Custodial HistoryThese records were acquired from the firm by Mrs Barbara Smith, Faculty Research Fellow in the Faculty of Commerce and Social Science in 1965 and she presented them to the Special Collections Department. Their former location in Special Collections was Business Records 14/i
