Administrative History | Charlotte Anne Philippina Pearse (1835-1925), daughter of Brice Pearse of Berkhampsted, married Rev Frederic Bagot (1822-1892) on 29 October 1862. He was the eighth son of Rt Rev Hon Richard Bagot (1799-1854), Bishop of Oxford, 1829-1845 and of Bath and Wells, 1845-1854. Frederic had been appointed as rector of Harpsden, near Henley-on-Thames in 1859 and he remained in this living until his death. Charlotte and Frederic had four children: Cecil Villiers (1865-1940), Harold Frederic (1867-1894), Mary Harriet Agnes (1868-1914) and Sidney Charles (1873-1933).
Harold attended Haileybury school in Hertfordshire. He became depressed and unwell in 1888 and was placed in a private asylum. He made an apparent recovery, but committed suicide in 1894. Mary lived with her mother all her life, spending her time teaching, and helping with charitable work. Cecil and Sidney both attended Radley College in Oxfordshire, and went to the University of Oxford; Cecil to Pembroke College (1884-1887) and Sidney to Keble College (1892), where he took a degree in Theology (1895). He later attended Wells College to train for the priesthood, and was ordained as a deacon at Chichester Cathedral in 1896, and as a priest there in 1897. He was curate at St Wilfrid's, Haywards Heath (1896-1899), and at Horningsham, Wiltshire (1900-1910), and afterwards vicar of Rous Lench, in the diocese of Worcester, (1911-1923). In 1919 he was admitted to Barnsley Hall Hospital, in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, for treatment for mental illness. Cecil studied law after leaving university. He married Ethel Garratt in 1903 and they had three children: Helen (b 1905), Milicent (b 1907), and Charlie [Charles Frederic Villiers] (1912-1986). The family lived in Battersea, and later in Putney. Helen and Milicent attended Putney High School, and Charlie gained a place at St. George's Chapel choir school at Windsor. Helen later attended Malvern College, and became a schoolmistress at Crowborough in 1925, while Milicent gained a place at St Hugh's College, Oxford, and went up in 1925.
After Frederic's death in 1892, Charlotte left Harpsden and went to live in London with her daughter Mary at 22 Brechin Place, South London. After Mary's death in 1914 she lived alone for some time before Miss Parker was engaged as a companion for her in 1917. Charlotte's last diary entry was written on 6 December 1925, and she died on 8 December. |
