DescriptionIncludes particular references to Charlotte's trip to France in February. Her fortnight's vacation began with a trip to the 'splendid old cathedral' at Amiens, though Charlotte was 'shocked' at the sight of the twenty-two altars. Whilst in Paris she visits the Palais Royale, Versailles and the Arc de Triumphe. She makes several trips to the Louvre, and although impressed by Notre Dame declares that it is 'not as handsome' as Westminster Abbey. Other vacations include a trip to Bangor undertaken in October.

The brief reference to Charlotte's weight, 'was weighed, 10st7', 26 October, contrasts with the absence of personal description which characterises these early diaries.

Cultural experiences noted include a 'trial of music at St James Hall', 8 April. She also notes her attendance at a mechanics' institute fete, 10 June.

Observations on international news include a reference to the departure of the Prince and Princess of Prussia from England, 2 February, and the imprisonment and fining of Montalambertis for the publication of a pamphlet which Charlotte reads about in 'The Times', 25 November.

Reading matter for the year includes a life of Arnold.
