Administrative History | Edith Hughes was born in 1867, one of the seven children of William Hughes and his wife Mary, nee Jones. The family was living at Reigate in Surrey before the move to Primrose Hill mentioned in the diary. (The house in Primrose Hill is the one next door to one which Liam Gallagher bought in 1997). Edith attended a finishing school in Nimes, France, in 1884. William Hughes was a tea dealer. By 1888 the family had moved to Ross-on-Wye where William died in 1902 and Mary in 1911, up to which date Edith worked as companion/housekeeper to her parents. The family were Quakers.
