Administrative HistoryGeorge Chortatsis was a Cretan dramatist, a contemporary of Shakespeare, writing at the end of the 16th century. He was the leading dramatist of the Cretan Renaissance which flourished at a time when Crete was under Venetian rule. The tragedy Erophile was written around 1595 and is an example of the use of a literary version of the Cretan dialect, a style developed during this period by Cretan writers such as Chortatsis.
