Description | This register consists of daily entries. It is laid out with six columns, the first gives names [? of employees], followed by two columns for weight measures - in pounds and ounces, a column headed 'B', and two further columns for monetary value, headed shillings and pence. At the top of each page are headings which appear to relate to type of production: 'Brutia for singles', 'Reggio for singles' or occasionally 'Italian for singles'.
This volume also contains a loose undated letter from a J. Smith to a Mr. J. Westmacote, concerning a female worker who wishes to leave Smith's service. He was paying her 2 shillings a week, although she knew nothing of the work when she arrived. He writes: 'she wishes to leave me thinking she can obtain more money,' and suggests that Westmacote might like to take her on. although he can make no obligation The letter has been annotated in different hands suggesting a date of 1830-1840 and proposing the correspondents to be James Smith, silk throwster to John Westmacott, silk throwster, Blockley. |
