The research notes include photocopies of original material dating back to 1889, correspondence with archives, libraries and other institutions; transcripts of Elgar correspondence, newscuttings, rough notes, printed material with manuscript annotations, index cards, photographs, library requisition, pages from Longman's Magazine, 1890, etc.
Elgar dedicated the piece to "my friends pictured within", with each variation being an affectionate portrayal of one of his circle of close acquaintances. |
