DescriptionThe collection of music manuscripts is an artificial collection of original scores and transcripts of musical compositions brought together by the University of Birmingham's Cadbury Research Library: Special Collections. The collection represents many aspects of the history of music, containing works, for example, of opera, symphonies, concertos and choral works etc.
ArrangementThis collection is catalogued at file level and the individual documents are numbered in a single numerical sequence starting at Music Ms/5001. This is in accordance with the listing established by the printed book: 'Fenlon Catalogue of Printed Music and Music Manuscripts before 1801 of the University of Birmingham' (a copy is held in the searchroom at the Cadbury Research Library: Special Collections).

Finding AidsThis online catalogue is a work in progress and will updated over time. Currently details for entries Music MS/5001-5042 are available online. In addition to this online catalogue, a paper catalogue documenting over 700 primary music sources is also available for consultation at Cadbury Research Library: Special Collections.

The 'Fenlon Catalogue of Printed Music and Music Manuscripts before 1801 in the Music Library of the University of Birmingham Barber Institute of Fine Arts' lists both printed books and original manuscripts from reference no: Music Ms/5001-5016, and handwritten additional entries Music Ms/5017-5037.

Paper list, printed July 2013, for entries Music Ms/5001-5042 is available in the reading room at the Cadbury Research Library; Special collections. Entries may be enhanced at a later date by staff and students from the Music Department at the University of Birmingham.

AcquisitionThis collection was largely acquired from the Barber Music Library when the music manuscripts were transferred to Special Collections in 1998. However, in many cases the acquisition details and provenance of the item is unknown and this is noted for each individual item.
Related MaterialAdditional music manuscripts can be found in the personal collections held in Special Collections of Edward Elgar, Granville Bantock, Christopher Edmunds, Leslie Bridgewater, Shaw-Hellier and Harold Rhodes.
