/1 Letter from James L. Howard to Oliver Lodge, written from 20 Oxford Road, Waterloo, Liverpool, dated 13 April 1887. Howard discusses the value of G and the calculation of resistance in connection with construction of a galvanometer. He informs Lodge of the date of DSc examinations.

/2 Letter from James L. Howard to Oliver Lodge, written from 20 Oxford Road, Waterloo, Liverpool, dated 14 September 1887. Howard gives a detailed description of Professor Quincke's paper on the behaviour of gas in a closed tube placed in a powerful magnetic field.

/3 Letter from James L. Howard to Oliver Lodge, written from Heidelberg, Gaisbergstrasse 18, dated 12 November 1887. Howard describes his life in Heidelberg, including a detailed account of his work: 'Dr Quincke [...] asked me to find the value of H on a pedestal in the laboratory with a German magnetometer'. He mentions his colleague Dr Lenard.

/4 Letter from James L. Howard to Oliver Lodge, written from Heidelberg, Gaisbergstrasse 18, dated 28 January 1888. Howard writes about his teaching and research at Heidelberg: 'I am working now at forces exerted by a magnetic field on a piece of iron suspended in it'. He includes small diagrams in the text of his letter. He writes about visiting Worms and Mannheim and the cold weather in Germany.

/5 Letter from James L. Howard to Oliver Lodge, written from 85 Earl's Court Road, London, dated 4 May 1888. Howard accepts Lodge's offer to propose him as a member of the Physical Society. He writes that the magnitude of the self induction Lodge asked for is about 0.0003 secohms. He is working on the Gramme dynamo and Ferranti machine. He describes results found with quadrant electrometer.

/6 Letter from James L. Howard to Oliver Lodge, written from 20 Oxford Road, Waterloo, Liverpool, dated 16 August 1890. Howard asks for information for a biography of Lodge he is writing for the Electrician. He asks where the Quincke microscope was obtained on behalf of Dr Dragoumis, and describes Dragoumis's work on heat. He describes his own research 'on double refraction in dielectrics during oscillatory discharge'. He and his colleagues are glad to hear of Miss Holt's success.

/7 Letter from James L. Howard to Oliver Lodge, written from 20 Oxford Road, Waterloo, dated 2 April 1892. Howard discusses plans for the new laboratory. He mentions Baily's appointment. He writes about examinations and teaching matters. He enquires about a raise in his salary.

/8 Letter from James L. Howard to Oliver Lodge, written from 86 St John's Road, Waterloo, dated 13 February 1899. Howard sends references to Boundary Conditions in periodicals.
