| Description | Correspondence with Horace Lamb [1849-1934, mathematician].
/1 Copy of letter from Oliver Lodge to Horace Lamb, dated 15 August 1924. Lodge praises Lamb's Rouse Ball Lecture. He explains his theory that the equations of motion of a perfect fluid may apply to the ether and asks for Lamb's opinion.
/2 Letter from Horace Lamb to Oliver Lodge, written from Newnham College, Cambridge, dated 15 September 1924. Lamb writes that the ether is a greater mystery than ever and expresses doubts about Lodge's model based on the notion of a continuous fluid. He writes: 'The best one can look for at present is some sort of mathematical scheme which will fill in the gulf between the old and the new physics'.
/3 Copy of letter from Oliver Lodge to Horace Lamb, dated 17 September 1924. Lodge writes about viscosity and continuity in relation to the ether and continues discussing its possible structure. |
