DescriptionCorrespondence with Eleanor Constance Lodge [1869-1936, historian and college head], sister of Oliver Lodge. With note identifying correspondent and giving reference to Oliver Lodge's autobiography 'Past Years', and another pencil note signed OJL which appears to be about a visit from E. C. Lodge, 7 June 1925.

/1 Letter from E. C. Lodge to Oliver Lodge, written from Steeple Aston, dated 8 January [1924]. E. C. Lodge regrets missing a funeral. She is glad Oliver Lodge heard from Raymond. With small map showing location of Westfield College.

/2 Incomplete letter from E. C. Lodge to Oliver Lodge [dating from c1922-1924]. First page missing. E. C. Lodge sends information about staff and students at Westfield College and about the local church. She writes: 'If I fail to get anyone I suppose you couldn't seize & bring Sir Henry Newbolt? He would be delightful'.

/3 Letter from E. C. Lodge to Oliver Lodge, written from Steeple Aston [dated summer 1923]. E. C. Lodge writes about her neighbour Mr Littlejohn, who hopes to speak to Oliver Lodge about a possible cure for his blindness. She is planning a bicycle tour and asks for advice about buying a new bicycle. She is going to St Andrews to give prizes then returning to Westfield for a history conference and dinner.

/4 Letter from E. C. Lodge to Oliver Lodge, written from Westfield College, Hampstead, dated 9 March [dating from 1921-1931]. E. C. Lodge writes that Sir George Aston and Professor Hill are staying to dinner. She thinks Baron ?Harada would be able to work in Alfred's house and recommends academics he should meet. She has heard from Bertha Phillpotts that Oliver Lodge's sermon at Cambridge was the most impressive part of the Mission and invites him to speak at Commemoration.

/5 Letter from E. C. Lodge to Oliver Lodge, written from 4 Clarence Place, Penzance, dated 27 March [1912]. E. C. Lodge expresses concern about Henry's health and financial situation. She feels they need to find out the truth about his circumstances. See also OJL/1/229/1.

/6 Letter from E. C. Lodge to Oliver Lodge, written from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, dated 19 March [19--]. E. C. Lodge writes that Miss Wordsworth will take in Norah and Barbara next term and discusses arrangements. She was very interested to get the letter about Raymond and comments: 'It's horrid their going, but one would hate them not to'.

/7 Letter from E. C. Lodge to Oliver Lodge, written from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, dated 2 February [19--]. E. C. Lodge asks whether Oliver Lodge was affected by the air raid. She asks if one of the family could visit the nephew of Miss Jex-Blake [Principal of Lady Margaret Hall] in the Workhouse Hospital. She enquires about teaching work for a Belgian man who is struggling to support himself and his family in England.

/8 Letter from E. C. Lodge to Oliver Lodge, written from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, dated 20 February 1912. With envelope. E. C. Lodge writes that she is enjoying Spanish lessons with Senor de Arteaga. She describes celebrations marking her 21 years at Lady Margaret Hall. She writes about her failed campaign concerning the college's Articles of Incorporation. She adds that she is expecting Norah at Lady Margaret Hall.

/9 Letter from E. C. Lodge to Oliver Lodge, written from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, dated 7 March [c1912]. Lodge expresses disappointment that Norah is not coming to Lady Margaret Hall.

/10 Letter from E. C. Lodge to Oliver Lodge, written from the train from Stafford, with envelope postmarked 26 June ?1912. E. C. Lodge discusses Alick, Clara and Phyllis's financial situation, and outlines various plans regarding their housing and employment. She suggests Norah could lodge with them whilst studying for her entrance exams for Lady Margaret Hall.

/11 Letter from E. C. Lodge to Oliver Lodge, written from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, 17 March 1913. E. C. Lodge congratulates Oliver Lodge on his election. She reports that Norah is not putting enough effort into her studies and comments: 'I am miserable at the thought of any girl slacking through life without any real aim - I can't imagine anything more depressing'.

/12 Letter from E. C. Lodge to Oliver Lodge, written from Headington, dated 1 October 1914. With envelope. E. C. Lodge discusses plans for Norah to board in Oxford and take her entrance exams in December. She is distressed about Henry and wishes she had done more to make him happy. She is recovering from her operation. She writes that there are fewer men at college this term and asks whether Raymond has gone to the front.

/13 Letter from E. C. Lodge to Oliver Lodge, written from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, dated 4 December [1914]. E. C. Lodge gives an outline of her plans to travel to London and go to France. She asks for a loan for her holiday.

/14 Letter from E. C. Lodge to Oliver Lodge, written from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, dated 5 December 1914. E. C. Lodge thanks Oliver Lodge for sending money for her holiday. She is keen to see what is happening abroad 'though it is not a cheerful time to be going there'.

/15 Unsigned letter to Miss Lodge, written from 17 Abercorn Place, dated 14 March 1923. The author praises Oliver Lodge's lecture but expresses doubts about spiritualism. With annotation which reads: 'Our English Literature Lecture (a Roman Catholic)' [possibly Miss Warren, mentioned in OJL/1/232/2].

/16 Letter from J. Stuart Horner to Miss Lodge, written from 107 Maple Road, Surbiton, dated 14 March 1923. Horner writes that it was a pleasure and privilege to be present [at Oliver Lodge's lecture] yesterday evening.

/17 Letter from Eva Elliot to Miss Lodge, written from 54 Welbeck Street, dated 14 March 1923. Elliot thanks E. C. Lodge for arranging Oliver Lodge's lecture, which was 'intensely interesting'.

/18 Copy of letter from Oliver Lodge to E. C. Lodge (addressed 'My dear Nell'), dated 6 July 1923. Oliver Lodge regrets that he will be away when E. C. Lodge proposed to visit. He cannot give any advice about buying a new bicycle.

/19 Letter from E. C. Lodge to Oliver Lodge, written from Steeple Aston, dated 5 September 1923. With envelope. E. C. Lodge writes that the London University Union would like Oliver Lodge to speak at their scientific evening. She has been cycling in Cornwall and working on her Gascony book. She has seen Humphrey, who hopes Oliver Lodge will attend the British Association meeting in Liverpool and go to Hoylake for his wedding. She will have a holiday with Miss Spens and visit Clara and Olive in Malvern before returning to Westfield.

/20 Copy of letter from Oliver Lodge to E. C. Lodge (addressed 'My dear Nell'), dated 10 January 1924. Oliver Lodge sends family news, in particular news of Violet's funeral. He writes about receiving a message from Violet after her death, stating that Raymond and Granny took charge of her when she became emotional.

/21 Letter from E. C. Lodge to Oliver Lodge, written from Steeple Aston, dated 2 January 1924. With envelope. E. C. Lodge is sorry to hear about Violet's illness. She sends a copy of a book she co-authored. She writes that she is quite well again, having replaced a defective gas-stove: 'it had been gradually poisoning me a little'.

/22 Letter from E. C. Lodge to Oliver Lodge, written from Westfield College, Hampstead, dated 14 May 1928. With envelope. Lodge writes that she is going to be the first woman to receive a DLitt from Oxford.

/23 Letter from Eleanor C. Lodge to Oliver Lodge, written from 5 Fyfield Road, Oxford, dated 27 November 1931. With envelope. E. C. Lodge sends thanks for the book [Past Years]. She hopes to do editing work for the Oxfordshire Record Society after Christmas and will go to London in the new year to have her portrait painted for Westfield; she misses the college quite a lot.
