/1 Letter from J. H. Muirhead to Oliver Lodge, written from The Rectory, Bratton Fleming, dated 30 June 1902. Muirhead congratulates Lodge on his knighthood. He and his wife are enjoying their holiday with Oliver. He admires Oliver's poetry and think it could be worked up into a book.
/2 Letter from J. H. Muirhead to Oliver Lodge, written from 1 York Road, Edgbaston, dated 5 June 1905. Muirhead discusses two papers written by Lodge; he comments on Lodge's interpretation of of Christianity and the relationship between God and the independent will of man. He has asked 30 Fellows of the Royal Society about their start in science and received some interesting replies.

/4 Letter from J. H. Muirhead to Oliver Lodge, written from Hotel Bellevue, Simplon-Kulm, dated 5 August 1906. Muirhead describes McTaggart's work and writes that he is highly regarded among philosophers. He would be very interested to read anything Lodge writes about McTaggart.
/5 Letter from J. H. Muirhead to Oliver Lodge, written from 1 York Road, Edgbaston, dated 23 September [1906]. Muirhead writes that Alderson's attempt is not new, Middlemore took part in a similar attempt some years ago. He advises Lodge not to speak for them. He adds that Linnell's idea is all right but he shouldn't expect Lodge to write anything special. He suggests Lodge should ask Stanley Hall to redeliver his lecture on the Sociological Society in London.
/6 Letter from J. H. Muirhead to Oliver Lodge, written from 1 York Road, Edgbaston, dated 30 September [1906]. Muirhead writes that he is in deep agreement with Lodge's call for 'a new reformation' but suggests some changes to the end of the article.

/13 Copy of letter from Oliver Lodge to J. H. Muirhead, dated 11 April 1918. Lodge writes that he suggested 'mental specialists' on the basis that it may be worth trying any treatment, however unlikely. He urges Muirhead to take care of his health: 'I have a feeling that you are rather starving yourself from high motives, but I don't think it wise'.

/16 Letter from J. H. Muirhead to Oliver Lodge, written from Bryn-Teg, Harlech, dated 7 May 1922. He discusses 'Painted Windows' [by Harold Begbie]. He writes about the scenery in Harlech and notes that there was a fire in the nearby golfer's hotel. He reflects on a prior conversation with Lodge and Blatchford about materialism and the relationship between the physical and the psychical world.

Muirhead describes development of his relationship with Pauline Bailey and their recent marriage. Muirhead thanks Lodge for sending his translation of Richet's book. He comments on Henry Jones's work and writes that Hetherington has written an excellent biography of Jones. He and Pauline will arrive at Liverpool in mid-May but they are apprehensive about returning to the English climate.

Lodge responds to Muirhead's comments on 'Beyond Physics', writing: 'Your phrase that "life must precede organisation, and cannot be a result or emergent quality of it," in other words that organisation is a consequence or effect of life or the vital principle, and not a cause of it, is a brief summing up of my doctrine'.

With copy of Lodge's reply, dated 23 December 1929. Lodge maintains that matter can enable the development of individuality and that the ether should be treated as physical. He outlines his Christmas plans.
/49 Letter from J. H. Muirhead to Oliver Lodge, written from Dyke End, Rotherfield, dated 1 January 1930 [it seems this is an error and the letter should be dated 1931]. Muirhead thanks Lodge for sending Jeans's reply about the ether. He believes the philosophical significance of the present discussion about physical reality is that it has 'forced the conception on the notice of physicists'. He plans to write to Nature on the subject. With copy of Lodge's reply, dated 3 January 1931. Lodge encourages Muirhead to write to Nature. He writes that Jeans and others have little knowledge of philosophy but have arrived at similar ideas via another path.

He writes of previous attempts to formulate a model of the ether. /73 Incomplete letter from J. H. Muirhead to Oliver Lodge, written from 1 York Road, Edgbaston, undated [pencil annotation suggests 1906]. Muirhead writes that a musician like Mr Cox could be of utmost value to a social project. He writes about the need for a systemic approach to moral instruction of children in teacher training colleges. He proposes a course of lectures on the basis of morals and religion. The rest of the letter is missing.
