DescriptionCorrespondence from G. F. C. Searle [1864-1954, physicist] with some copies of Lodge's replies. The file also contains correspondence between Searle and various others regarding letters from Oliver Heaviside to Oliver Lodge.

/1 Letter from G. F. C. Searle to Oliver Lodge, written from 11 Fitzwilliam Street, Cambridge, dated 11 February 1893. Searle describes his plans for turning his articles on the magnetic action of currents into a book and asks for Lodge's feedback.

/2 Letter from G. F. C. Searle to Oliver Lodge, written from Wyncote, 170 Hills Road, Cambridge, dated 18 December 1921. Searle writes that Oliver Heaviside is in financial difficulty and asks whether Lodge is able to help. He adds that Heaviside would be glad to see Lodge.

/3 Letter from G. F. C. Searle to Oliver Lodge, written from Falkland Lodge, Falkland Road, Torquay, dated 7 January 1925. Searle writes that Oliver Heaviside is very ill and has been forcibly removed to a nursing home. He asks Lodge to contribute towards the cost of the nursing home.

/4 Copy of letter from Oliver Lodge to G. F. C. Searle, dated 9 January 1925. Lodge offers £5 towards the cost of Oliver Heaviside's nursing home and suggests Sir Charles Parsons and Sir Robert Hadfield as potential contributors.

/5 Letter from G. F. C. Searle to Oliver Lodge, written from Falkland Lodge, Falkland Road, Torquay, dated 10 January 1925. Searle writes that Oliver Heaviside's immediate costs have been covered by the Institute of Electrical Engineers and other private donors but he will keep Lodge's offer in reserve. He sends news of Oliver Heaviside's state of health and life in the nursing home.

/6 Copy of letter from Oliver Lodge to G. F. C. Searle, dated 15 January 1925. Lodge thanks Searle for sending information about Oliver Heaviside and for taking care of the situation.

/7 Letter from G. F. C. Searle to Mrs Langley (daughter of Oliver Lodge), written from Wyncote, 170 Hills Road, Cambridge, dated 3 November 1949. Searle writes that the Institute of Electrical Engineers and the Post Office Research Department are planning to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Oliver Heaviside and would be interested in obtaining copies of any letters from Oliver Heaviside to Oliver Lodge which have survived.

/8 Copy of letter from the Secretary to the late Sir Oliver Lodge to G. F. C. Searle, dated 11 November 1949. The author arranges to send Oliver Lodge's collection of Oliver Heaviside letters, and mentions Wilson Finding's plan to publish Oliver Lodge's letters from Heaviside and others.

/9 Letter from Bill [Wilson Finding] to Dom, written from Allwynds, Forest Road, Woodfalls near Salisbury, dated 14 November 1949. The author sends Oliver Lodge's Heaviside letters. He would like to speak with Dr Searle about Lodge's letters on his return from Damascus. He adds that the wedding went well.

/10 Copy of letter from the Secretary to the late Sir Oliver Lodge to G. F. C. Searle, written from The Wick, Barnt Green near Birmingham, dated 17 November 1949. The author sends Oliver Lodge's letters from Oliver Heaviside, adding that Wilson Finding would like to discuss the possibility of publishing some of Lodge's letters.

/11 Letter from G. F. C. Searle to Miss Alvey, written from Wyncote, 170 Hills Road, Cambridge, dated 19 November 1949. Searle acknowledges receipt of Oliver Heaviside's letters. He writes that he may, if allowed, refer to a meeting of Oliver Heaviside and Oliver Lodge in his memoir of Heaviside. He believes that publication of the letters would be difficult as they would be rendered almost meaningless when read out of context.

/12 Copy of letter [from the Secretary to the late Sir Oliver Lodge] to G. F. C. Searle, written from The Wick, Barnt Green near Birmingham, dated 21 November 1949. The author comments on the Heaviside letters and Wilson Finding's hopes of publication.

/13 Copy of letter [from the Secretary to the late Sir Oliver Lodge] to G. F. C. Searle, written from The Wick, Barnt Green near Birmingham, dated 3 November 1950. The author is pleased that Searle made use of the letters from Oliver Heaviside to Oliver Lodge in his paper for the Oliver Heaviside centenary. The letters will not be published but a selection will be placed in the archives of the Physical Society.

/14 Letter from G. F. C. Searle to Miss Alvey, written from Wyncote, 170 Hills Road, Cambridge, dated 4 November 1950. Searle describes the Oliver Heaviside Centenary Celebration and his own research on Oliver Heaviside. He discusses the correspondence between Oliver Lodge and Oliver Heaviside. He writes that valuable papers deposited with the Institute of Electrical Engineers were damaged when stored in Wales during the war.

/15 Letter from G. F. C. Searle to Miss Alvey, written from Wyncote, 170 Hills Road, Cambridge, dated 12 November 1950. Searle apologises for the delay in sending his letter; he has been unwell.

/16 Copy of letter from [Miss Alvey] to G. F. C. Searle, written from The Wick, Barnt Green near Birmingham, dated 13 November 1950. [Alvey] thanks Searle for his account of the Oliver Heaviside Centenary Celebration. [She] adds that L. P. Jacks is mentally and physically well at 90 years old.

/17 Letter from Bill [Wilson Finding] to Dom, written from Allwynds, Forest Road, Woodfalls near Salisbury, dated 16 November 1950. The author responds to Searle's letter about the Oliver Heaviside Centenary (OJL/1/356/14) and lends a copy of the Centenary volume.

/18 Copy of letter from [Miss Alvey] to G. F. C. Searle written from The Wick, Barnt Green near Birmingham, dated 22 November 1950. [Alvey] thanks Searle for offering to talk over the content of the Heaviside-Lodge letters, and proposes to send Wilson Finding, an electrical engineer, to meet him.

/19 Copy of letter from [Miss Alvey] to Bill [Wilson Finding], written from The Wick, Barnt Green near Birmingham, dated 4 December 1950. [Alvey] writes that Professor Herbert Dingle is willing to look through the Heaviside-Lodge letters, making a meeting with Dr Searle unnecessary.

/20 Letter from Bill [Wilson Finding] to Dom, written from Allwynds, Forest Road, Woodfalls near Salisbury, dated 18 December 1950. [Wilson Finding] writes that Dr Searle has sent the Heaviside-Lodge letters to the Physical Society for Professor H. Dingle to survey. He fears they have hurt Dr Searle's feelings by taking the matter out of his hands.
