/1 Copy of letter from Oliver Lodge to Burroughs, dated 9 September 1927. Lodge writes that scientists sympathise with Burroughs' views and any hostile comments about his sermon were 'rather worked up by the Press'.

/2 Letter from Burroughs to Oliver Lodge, written from The Palace, Ripon, dated 12 September 1927. Burroughs discusses the reaction to his sermon and thanks Lodge for his letter of reassurance. He would like to talk to Lodge about psychic incidents although he has not had any experiences himself.

/3 Letter from Burroughs to Oliver Lodge, written from The Palace, Ripon, dated 19 December 1927. Burroughs sends a proof copy of the foreword to his Diocesan Handbook for 1928. He is shocked by the vote in the House of Commons last Friday.

/4 Letter from Burroughs to Oliver Lodge, written from The Palace, Ripon, dated 31 July 1928. Burroughs raises questions about polytheism and the ether after reading Lodge's recent book.

Lodge writes that he is not guilty of polytheism; he believes in beings 'loftier than man' but subject to the majesty of a supreme God. He defends his belief in the ether as a stepping stone towards understanding 'the puzzling question of psycho-physical interaction'.
