| Description | Letter dated 22 March and written from Mariemount, Edgbaston. He addresses her as Miss Horniman and thanks her for a letter, written inadvertently to him in reply to one from which had been sent by his eldest son.
He writes to Annie Horniman (1860-1937), a renowned repertory theatre pioneer, about 'improving the Drama in this place'. He refers to Professor de Selincourt's steps to begin a Drama Society but hopes to eventually be able to follow what she has done in Manchester [where she took over the Gaiety Theatre and established it as what is recognised as the first full-scale modern repertory theatre]. He expresses admiration for her work, referring to a visit of her company which included putting two of them up at his own house, and what she has accomplished in Dublin [where she was involved in the establishment of the Abbey Theatre in 1904] as well as Manchester. He writes that he will be grateful for advice when he is in a position to take any development further |
