For many years a colony of Portugal, Angola fought a long guerilla campaign from 1961. In 1975 the Portuguese withdrew and civil war broke out which was not resolved until 1992.

In 1976 SCF made small grants for medicines and clothing for refugees in Angola and those who had fled to Portugal. Small-scale aid continued until 1979. SCF started work in Angola in 1989, initiating a national programme for family tracing and reunification with the Ministry of Social Assistance and Reinsertion. SCF expanded its work in providing child welfare and emergency relief and rehabilitation. Programmes have included support for children in difficult circumstances, health and nutrition, and child protection.
