Brazil has been an independent republic since the 19th century. Following a coup in 1964 the country was ruled by the military until 1965.
A grant of £500 was sent to Brazil via the International Union for Child Welfare [IUCW] following floods in April 1960. SCF work in Brazil began in late 1989/early 1990 with a survey of areas of extreme poverty. A Field Director was appointed in 1990. SCF began exploring contacts with some of the many well-established local NGOs. Aid given included education surveys, support for teacher and nursery staff training, AIDS education, children's rights, child labour, and the conditions of street children. |
