Burundi became independent in 1962. During 1972 there was heavy fighting between rival political groups, leading to many casualties - up to 120,000 were killed. In 1973-1974 SCF made three grants of £500 following the tribal fighting: one for Burundi, and one each for refugees in Zaire [now DR Congo] and Rwanda.

From 1995 SCF began working with the World Food Programme on food security in Burundi. In 1996 SCF investigated the needs of children in Ngozi, Kayanza and Muyinga provinces. SCF began projects relating to health, particularly HIV/AIDS, and unaccompanied children.
