After a complex history in the 19th century, the Republic of Colombia was founded in 1886.
SCF began a small sponsorship programme in Colombia in 1973. From 1976 to 1977 SCF ran a day care centre in Bogota including a training programme for local girls to run similar day care centres. After a year it was discovered that there would not be employment for the girls so the SCF centre was closed down. SCF continued to support a day care centre - probably the same one - after the sponsorship programme ended in 1981. In 1985, following an earthquake disaster, SCF provided aid in cooperation with the Irish agency GOAL and SCF USA. SCF renewed its presence in the country from 1991. Since 1998 its programme included a DFID/ECHO funded emergency project focused on internally displaced families in eastern Colombia and around Bogota. In 1998 contacts were made with the local authorities in the Department of Quindio in order to initiate programme work in the city of Armenia. |
