Cuba became independent of Spain in 1898. In 1959 the dictator Batista was overthrown by forces led by Fidel Castro. In 1962 US-backed insurgents were defeated in the Bay of Pigs incident. Towards the end of the same year, the country was blockaded for a month in connection with the missile crisis between the US and the Soviet Union.

In 1964 Save the Children (SCF) gave £1000 for relief after the emergency of Hurricane Flora; SCF commenced working in the country in 1995 and withdrew in December 2005, with completion of project work following in March 2006.
