Until 1939, Dominica was part of the Leeward Islands colony, then in 1940 came under the Windward Islands. In 1978 independence was achieved.

SCF sent a nutritionist to Dominica in 1979 to give help after a hurricane destroyed the banana crop. She developed a programme for mothers and school children, and worked with local clinics to improve their services. In addition to articles, lectures and broadcasts, she worked to increase awareness of nutrition in clinics - with a child health passport, and schools - with lessons and training courses. A local nutritionist was appointed to take over when SCF handed over the project in 1982.
