El Salvador has existed as an independent republic since 1841. The FMLN launched a guerilla campaign against the government in the 1980s which continued until 1992 when a peace agreement was signed. In the 1980s Save the Children (SCF) funded relief for displaced persons and refugees. Almost £6,000 was allocated by SCF for earthquake relief in 1986-1987. Following an earthquake in El Salvador in 2001, SCF provided primary health care services and emergency supplies to earthquake victims.
