In 1941 the Italian colony of Eritrea was conquered by Allied Forces. It was administered by Britain until 1952 when the country was handed over to Ethiopia under a UN resolution to form the federation of Ethiopia and Eritrea. The country was integrated in Ethiopia in 1962, an event which caused the outbreak of a secession movement. This conflict continued until Eritrea became independent in 1993.
In 1952, SCF's general director, Brigadier Boyce, visited Eritrea. In 1956, SCF gave a grant of towels, clothes, blankets, shoes and toys. In 1958, an allocation of £1,135 is recorded to Eritrea. The purpose is unknown. In 1976 or 1977 SCF began to support a mother and child health programme in Asmara. It is not clear when this ended. The SCF UK office was set up in Asmara in December 1992 |
