Fiji was a British colony until 1970 when it became independent. Small grants were made to Fiji in 1970 and 1971, and from 1973 to 1977. It appears the money was transmitted through SCF New Zealand. In 1970 SCF granted £1000 to CHANCE [Children Having A Need of Care and Education] for work with children in Suva. In 1977, SCF NZ gave a grant for the construction of a hostel attached to the 'Crippled Children's School' at Suva. Sponsorship became a major element of grants to Fiji from this time. In 1982 a New Zealand physiotherapist went to Fiji to train local people in the identification and treatment of cerebral palsy. This resulted in the publication of an illustrated manual for the treatment of the illness. SCF's programme in Fiji included work relating to cerebral palsy and disability. |
