Save the Children (SCF) made a grant of £3,750 to Guatemala in 1972. Following an earthquake in February 1976, SCF sent emergency aid. Co-operation with the Scandinavian and American SCFs led to the foundation of the Save the Children Alliance. A long-term development programme, including improvements to mother and child health services in Joyabaj, was begun as a follow-up to this aid. This included training for midwives and an ante-natal clinic. A pilot programme was begun in 1978 in nutritional education for village women. In 1979 a low-cost irrigation project was begun and women's groups were supported. There was also a programme to train health promoters in the local community. Funding continued until 1985.
