| Administrative History | Programme spending in 1993/94, 1994/95 Liberia was constituted as a state in 1847. A military coup overthrew the government in 1980. Civil war broke out in 1990.
Save the Children (SCF) began an emergency programme in Liberia, based in Monrovia in January 1991. Two projects were established, working in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare: 1.A health work project: initially focussed on community health, through the community health referral system for greater Monrovia, and later through HIV/AIDS and TB projects. 2.A social welfare project: this includes three night shelters in Monrovia for children living on the streets or in high-risk situations, as well as work with the Ministry to keep children at home where possible through the use of tools such as the family tracing project.
Due to fighting in the country, programmes were temporarily suspended in 1992, 1994, and 1996, however they were subsequently resumed. SCF provided emergency relief along with other aid agencies through the First and Second Liberian Civil Wars. |
