Formerly French Sudan, Mali became an autonomous republic within the French Community. It became the independent republic of Mali in 1960.
SCF's work in Mali began in 1984 when it began helping the govenment organise its extended programme of immunisation in Mopti provice. In 1985, SCF was working with other agencies to draw up an efficient aid programme to deal with severe drought. In 1986, mother and child heatlh and nutrition programmes were being developed as well as training of health workers and health education. In 1987 a drought-monitoring network was also running.
