In 1965 SCF made a grant of £2000 for cyclone relief in Sri Lanka, to be administered by the Red Cross. In 1978 SCF made further contributions to cyclone damage and relief work in Sri Lanka. SCF started working in Sri Lanka in 1979, when it established a child sponsorship scheme and child welfare programme. SCF's programme related to child health and nutrition, and child care training. Following the outbreak of Civil War in 1983 SCF began providing relief and support for displaced people and children affected by conflict. SCF also started projects relating to disaster management training, street children, and community-based rehabilitation in Newara Eliya, as well as providing emergency relief and conducting nutritional surveys in areas affected by drought. In the 1990s SCF continued its work with displaced people and refugees whilst also developing programmes relating to children in residential care, children with disabilities, and early childhood development. In 2004 Save the Children in Sri Lanka was formed, a partnership between Save the Children Norway and Save the Children UK. |
