Administrative HistoryWestern Sahara is a disputed territory administered by both Morocco and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR). Previously a Spanish colony, the administration of Western Sahara was jointly given to Morocco and Mauritania in 1975, at which point war broke out. A Saharawi nationalist movement, called the Polisario Front proclaimed the SADR in 1976. Mauritania relinwuished its claim to the area in 1979, however war continued between the SADR and Morocco.
