TitleLetter from Elizabeth Shaw to her son, William Edward Shaw at Liverpool
Extent1 item
Date4-10 September [1801?]
Description(Friday 4th) Elizabeth relates what happened after William's departure for Liverpool. Betsy went to dine with Dr Barber; Mary and she herself dined at the Lion and, after attending to various matters in town, went home. (Saturday 5th) She hopes William has had a good journey to Liverpool; advises him to pay attention to his health. She tells him what everyone is doing at home; she misses him and her husband. (Sunday 6th) Mr Shaw has returned home. They went to church to hear Mr Griffiths preach; she complains about the lack of attendance by many people. The words of a hymn on piety in youth are quoted for William to learn. (Monday 7th) She is busy with the laundry; a new servant has arrived. (Tuesday 8th) She is preparing for a journey to Birmingham which she hopes will be beneficial to Betsy's poor health. (Wednesday 9th) She is not writing much each day as leaning forward is painful to her. (Thursday 10th) She will make her journey the following day. Betty, a neighbour, is forever dissatisfied with her lot. Elizabeth has received three letters: one is from William's brother, in Oswestry, who is quite well and who speaks of a famous haunted house in Wales. She praises William's resolution. Betsy is too ill to write to him now, and Elizabeth fears that her health may not improve.
