A young girl next door has died of typhus. Parkinson now ignores Sarah completely; the scandal of her situation is most worrying. Mr Richard's will has caused friction in the Southfield family. It is feared that Mr Wilkinson will never recover his reason; he drinks too much also. Lucy is very ill, but Mrs Williamson is not well enough to go and tend to the shop; she also dare not leave Sarah alone.
