DescriptionMinutes and supporting papers, and index books of University of Birmingham Finance and General Purposes committee, originally known as the Finance and Estates committee. The name of the committee was changed in September 1927 but the volume and minute numbers continue in an unbroken sequence. There is a complete set of minutes for the entire period of the committee's existence, from July 1900 to July 1987. The set of index books covers the period from 1925 to 1952, volumes UB/COM/1/1/12 to UB/COM/1/1/24
The Finance and General Purposes committee was abolished in 1987. After this date, University Council dealt more directly with financial matters, and was more concerned with financial policy.

Records of the Finance and General Purposes committee are a valuable record for the study of the University of Birmingham's financial position and circumstances from its establishment until 1987, and allow the researcher to chart the impact of national economic conditions on the institution over this period, as well as the development and expansion of the University's teaching activities and estate, seen through the discussion of staff recruitment and employment, the allocation of grants and the investment of donations, capital building projects, and income and expenditure relating to the student body
