| Description | Minutes of a committee established by the Senate in December 1969 after reviewing the report of a similar committee set up in May 1969 to address the terms and conditions of research staff posts at the University. Comment on the report of the earlier committee had been received from the Research Staff Association and from the Boards of the Faculties, and Senate decided to establish a larger committee to examine the matter again with knowledge of the comments received.
The terms of reference of the committee established in December 1969 were 'to examine the terms and conditions of service of Research Staff' and membership consisted of the Deputy Principal (chair); Vice-Principal; Registrar; and a number of academic staff. At the first meeting of the committee, held on 26 January 1970, members discussed papers received, consisting of the Report of the Committee on Research Staff; comments of Faculty Boards; comments of the Research Staff Association; and notes about the Research Staff enquiry from the Assistant Registrars of Arts and Law, Commerce and Social Science, Education, Medicine and Dentistry, and Science and Engineering. The committee considered comments about the University's attitude to research; criteria for salary; the career structure and classification of research workers; and eligibility for conference grants Minutes of the next meeting, held on 3 March 1970, include a copy of the draft report of the Research Staff Committee. The minutes also contain a copy of the final report to the Senate, dated 20 May 1970. Minutes of the last meeting for which minutes survive record the Senate's acceptance of the recommendations of the Senate Executive Committee, that the report be referred for comment to the Boards of the Faculties and of the School of Education, and to the Research Staff Association; and that the Senate would consider the report again with the comments of those bodies. The minutes also note the comments of the Faculties, the Neurocommunications Unit, the Non-Professorial Staff Executive Committee, and the Research Staff Association
It is possible that the employment conditions of research staff continued to be discussed and managed by the Research Councils and Research Staff Sub-Committee, listed as a sub-committee of the Committee of Principals and Deans in University Calendars produced in the 1970s, but no records of this committee appear to have survived |
