TitleRecords of University of Birmingham University Committee on Super Conductivity
Extent2 volumes
Date1988-1996
DescriptionMinutes of a committee intended to promote the central co-ordination of information on superconductivity within the University, and to provide a channel for the transmission of requests and recommendations to the University's governing bodies.

Its terms of reference were to be responsible to the Senate for policy and co-ordination concerning superconductivity across the University; to consider new initiatives and long term strategy for superconductivity in the University and make recommendations to the Senate and/or the resourcing bodies of the University as appropriate; to appoint members of a Management Group for Superconductivity; to receive and as necessary consider reports from the Management Group and other such relevant groups in the University.

Membership consisted of the Vice-Principal (chair); the Deans of the Faculties of Engineering and Science; two representatives, including one professor, nominated from each of the Faculties of Engineering and Science; and the members of the Management Group for Superconductivity. Five advisers from industry/government service were invited to attend the summer term meeting

Minutes of the Committee record that there was already a Birmingham High Tc (HTC) superconductivity research programme at the University when the Committee was appointed. The Committee discussed the underfunding of Superconductivity research and intiatives of the Science and Engineering Research Council; current activities of the University of Birmingham Superconductivity Research Group and current funding; future developments and potential problem areas; industrial interaction and collaborative projects with companies; and the submission of report to the National Committee for the Coordination of Superconductivity Research. Minutes also contain copies of the report of University Committee on Superconductivity to the Senate

The Committee received minutes of meetings of the Management Group for Superconductivity and regular reports of the main research groups in the University's Superconductivity Programmes and these are included in the minutes, together with submissions to the Science and Engineering Research Council Superconductivity Rolling Grant Review

Minutes of the meeting held on 18 May 1990 record discussion about the resourcing of Superconductivity, its integration into the University's Annual Planning Process, and the possible allocation of funds for superconductivity by the Strategy Planning and Resources Committee (see UB/COM/7 for minutes of this committee). Minutes of meetings held in 1993 include discussion about EC grant applications and University's success in receiving EC Human Capital and Mobility interdisciplinary training fellowships

Minutes of the meeting held on 24 May 1996 note that the Committee need no longer be organised as a formal Senate Committee and therefore had more freedom to invite individuals to attend meetings. No further records of the Committee have been transferred to the University Archives, and it is uncertain whether meetings continued to be minuted
