Its terms of reference were to advise and act on behalf of the Academic Board on all matters relating to the quality of provision of teaching and learning in the University, including to monitor via academic audit reports and other means the quality of education in the University and to disseminate good practice; to co-ordinate submissions for HEFCE Quality Assessment and to monitor action arising from such assessments; to participate in the formulation of and to receive the annual forward plans of the Teaching Forum and the Staff Development Unit in its activities relating to teaching quality and to support their implementation as appropriate; to ensure the combined consideration of 'Enterprise Issues' and to foster combined links between 'Enterprise Counsellors' with the University; and to consider bids for any internal or external funds which may be available to promote innovation and quality in teaching
Membership consisted of a Pro-Vice-Chancellor (chair); one representatives from each Faculty; the Convenor of the Teaching Forum; one member nominated by and from among the Enterprise Counsellors; the Librarian or nominee; the Guild Vice-President (Education and Welfare) and one other representative of the Guild of Students. The Academic Secretary and the Director of Staff Development also attended. The Committee reported to the Academic Board
The Committee discussed the Academic Audit; the activities of the Teaching Forum; the work of the Staff Development Unit on Teaching Quality following the HEFCE Quality Assessment; Enterprise issues and the role of Enterprise Counsellors, and the possible need for Faculty Teaching and Learning Committees; and the identification and dissemination of good practice in teaching and learning. Minutes include copies of papers presented by the Director of Staff Development which focus on effective teaching. A number of Focus Groups were set up by the Committee in 1996, including the Generic Skills Focus Group and the Effective Learning Group. Minutes of the meeting held on 17 December 1996 include a paper on the Student Induction process 1995-1996 based on research carried out by the Guild of Students, and following this report a working group was convened by the Committee to consider the Student Induction process. Minutes of meetings held at the start of 1998 discuss issues arising from the Academic Audit 1996-1997, and contain references to the formulation of a Teaching and Learning Strategy as well as to modularisation, and changes to assessment There are supporting papers for meeting to be held 21 April 1998 but no minutes. These include papers relating to government response to the Dearing Report, and references to QAAHE's consultation paper Developing the Quality Assurance and Standards Framework for UK Higher Education
